You can ensure your current loft space meets the required Ofgem standards by topping up your existing insulation with new – the process is quick and simple, taking a little as 1 hour in some cases to complete.
Loft insulation is the process of laying rolls of insulation material between the joists of your loft, almost creating a ‘blanket’ type effect. This is a heat retention method, it prevents additional heat from escaping through your roof space.
Room in roof insulation is one of the most cost-effective solutions for saving money on your heating bills. ECO3 grants are available now for this insulation measure meaning, if eligible, you can get funding for both your room in roof insulation and for a brand new boiler installation!
Uninsulated homes are highly susceptible to temperature changes in the summer and winter months, which can increase your energy bills. If your home suffers from rapid heat loss then even despite having a good heating system, your home can still be susceptible to the cold which is why room in roof insulation is so effective.
Having your cavity walls insulated is an effective way of reducing your energy bills. Homes that were built after the 1920s typically have cavity walls instead of solid walls. Generally cavity walls are better insulators than solid walls, but the thermal efficiency of cavity walls can still be improved drastically through ‘cavity wall insulation’. The added insulation (a material injected directly into your walls) will help lower your energy bills and aid in combating mould and condensation.
Cavity walls are given their name to describe the gap between the two wall layers of brickwork i.e. a wall formed from two thicknesses of brickwork or blockwork with a space between them’.
1 in 3 UK homeowners live in a home that’s been built before the 1930’s, these homes have wall structures that can only retain 55% of all the heat generated by your central heating system. Central heating accounts for over 75% of an average UK households energy expenditure. Homes with solid walls, on average, allow 45% of generated heat to escape, that’s almost half of all the heat generated by your heating system! Solid walls can be insulated by installing a layer of insulating material to the outer wall of your home, done with minimal disruption to your home’s interior. You could also see potential annual savings of between £150 and £300 with internal wall insulation.
The Government’s ECO Scheme, set up in 2013, enables low income households to improve the energy efficiency of their heating systems and save money on their energy bills.
The scheme means that energy suppliers like British Gas or EDF Energy are legally obliged to help their customers save money on their heating bills, funded via the eco scheme, there are grants available for you to improve the efficiency of your heating system. For little or no charge. Storage heaters are electric heaters that store thermal energy by heating up internal ceramic bricks during the night and then release heat from them to keep your home warm during the day.
This dual measure package includes underfloor insulation (worth £1,200) and a brand new A* boiler upgrade replacement. Whether you have a suspended wooden floors (typically where there is a basement present) or concrete floors, improving your insulation could save you up to £70 per year. The actual process of insulating your floor will vary a little depending on what kind of space you have so once you have booked a survey with one of our specialist surveyors, they will advise you of the requirements.
A ‘combi’ boiler is both a high efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in one single compact unit. Combi boilers are very cost-effective as they heat water instantly, directly from the mains, rather than being heated and then stored in a cylinder.
Energy Company Obligation (ECO) 3 is out in full force and the government’s more determined than ever to eradicate fuel poverty through its ‘Affordable Warmth Scheme’, delivering energy efficiency and heating measures to homes in Great Britain. In order to qualify then you, or someone living within the household must be in receipt of at least one of the following benefits:
Armed Forces Independence Payment • Attendance Allowance • Carer’s Allowance • Child Benefit** • Constant Attendance Allowance • Disability Living Allowance • Pension Guarantee Credit • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) • Income Support • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit • Mobility Supplement • Personal Independence Payment • Severe Disablement Allowance • Tax Credits (Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits) • Universal Credit •
Child Benefit** (on the condition that the household’s relevant income does not exceed the amount set out in Chapter 3 of our scheme guidance)
